My thoughts on "Joe Turner's Come and gone"

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I thought this play was super suspenseful. From the Juba scene on I really wanted to know what happened to Loomis.

There was something I wanted to bring up. Wasn't there a character in one of the Harry Potter book's? I'm pretty sure he was a Professor and a bit on the mysterious side if I recall. He may have been black as well, but that I'm not positive on. I'm thinking J.K. Rowling may be a fan of August Wilsom. What do you guys think?

  1. I like your connection to Harry Potter. I love the series and the movies. I think the magical side of the play definately resonates with the Harry Potter feel. I also was really interested after the Juba because I wanted to know what it meant and who Loomis really was.

  2. Magic is always an interesting element when used correctly because it brings reality into sharper focus. The magic in Harry Potter is secular--but it focuses us on the idea of growing up, having to learn new things and overcome obstacles and decide who you are and how you stand up for yourself.

In Wilson, magic is spiritual, but it is all about identity here as well, not just Loomis's identity, but the identity of African American people in the midst of the Great Migration. In the Juba Scene, he takes on the influence of Africa, the lingering specter of Africa and the chance to "stand up" all in one scene.
